About Us MISSION STATEMENT: OUR BEGINNINGS: The Lakewood Baptist Church was started as a branch of the Pawtuxet Baptist Church on December 10, 1889 with fourteen members of the Pawtuxet church and ten from the Cranston Street Baptist Church. With additions by baptisms and letters of transfer the membership increased to thirty-five by 1894. The chapel was dedicated in July of the same year having been built from funds raised by those interested in the work combined with a generous gift of one thousand dollars from the State Convention The land was given to the church by Mr. J. A. Whitman. From the time of the dedication of the chapel until the formation of the branch church, the work was carried on by the organization know as the Chapel Aid Society. On July 21, 1894 a meeting Lakewood Branch Baptist Church was held in the chapel. After a time of prayer, it was voted to organize an independent Baptist Church. It was decided that these thirty-four members present together with such others as should bring their letters from other Baptist Churches should for the constituent membership of this new church to be called Lakewood Baptist Church. With each new pastor came a growth in the congregation facilitating a need to enlarge our place of worship. On September 18,1955 a dedication of ten new Sunday school rooms took place at the eleven o'clock service. Three years later on October 20, 1957 the newly completed Church was dedicated at 4:00pm. Ceremonies were held on Sunday, May 19, 1974 dedicating the former sanctuary to be known as Armstrong Hall in honor of Rev. Chester Armstrong. We continue to enjoy our beautiful sanctuary with the addition of the new wood ceiling added in 1986.
